Sometimes, nature has other plans in store. What was meant to be a day of celebration, the Tree Planting Day with the City of Mandurah and Bouvard Coast Care Group (BCCG) was disrupted as heavy rain turned the event site into a temporary lake. Instead of setting up tents and welcoming volunteers, organisers watched as the rain washed away their plans.
However, communities rooted in care are resilient and adaptable. While the planned Tree Planting Day couldn’t proceed, the City of Mandurah took the initiative. Thanks to their efforts, trees and plants have now been planted across the dunes. These freshly planted species are anchoring the sand and enhancing the area, a quiet but meaningful victory for the local environment.
A New Opportunity to Make a Difference
This year, in honour of Landcare Week and BCCG’s 30th anniversary, Tree Planting Day is back on the calendar. Although some of the original attractions may not be part of the event, its essence remains untouched. The morning will revolve around bringing people together to care for the coast, connect with others & contribute to environmental restoration.
30 Years of Dedicated Action
Over the last three decades, BCCG has remained committed to vital environmental efforts, planting trees, stabilising dunes & ensuring the coast remains clean. Thousands of hands have dug into the soil, working together to plant native seedlings that secure the land and strengthen the local ecosystem. Tree Planting Day reflects the strength of ongoing community efforts and environmental care across generations.
Protecting Habitat
Every tree planted plays an essential role in the environment. These efforts aid in stabilising the dunes, preventing soil erosion and creating habitats for native wildlife. These new plantings also provide much-needed shelter and food sources for animals like local kangaroos, connecting community efforts directly to preserving biodiversity.
Building Community Connections
Tree Planting Day is about much more than planting trees. It’s an event centred on people. By coming together to dig, plant, and nurture the land, individuals and families help foster a shared sense of accomplishment and pride. Participants share stories, create memories & strengthen the bonds that knit them to both the land and their community.
How You Can Get Involved
Grab your gardening gloves, gather your friends & get ready to dig in. Melros Reserve is ready to be transformed and strengthened by your efforts.
By participating, you’re not just helping to protect the coast, you’re contributing to a 30-year legacy of care and restoration. Every plant counts & every individual effort adds up to make a lasting impact on the environment.
Join the movement. Show up for the land. And together, create a coastline that thrives for generations to come.
The Bouvard Coast Care Group (BCCG) welcomes anyone interested in joining their mission to protect and preserve the local environment. BCCG will have a pavilion at the upcoming planting event, offering a fantastic opportunity for attendees to learn more about the group’s history & initiatives, connect with like-minded individuals & explore ways to get involved. Be sure to visit the pavilion and find out how you can contribute to making a difference along the Dawesville & Bouvard coast.
