Plastics Ban

Free Support for WA businesses preparing for plastic bans

WA is taking steps to reduce plastic pollution by implementing a ban on non-compostable plastic items from 2023 to 2025 for all organizations.

In an effort to reduce plastic pollution, Western Australia is phasing out various plastic items from 2023 to 2025. The Stage 2 Plan for Plastics, effective from 1 March 2023, implements bans on supply in 4 stages.

The initial ban, effective from 1 September 2023, covers plastic microbeads, degradable plastic additives, cotton bud sticks, and loose-fill expanded plastic packaging. Subsequent bans will include disposable plastic coffee cups, cup lids, and unlidded food trays starting from 1 March 2024. Following this, bans will extend to plastic containers, bowls, trays used in food services, and non-compostable produce bags from 1 September 2024. By 1 July 2025, moulded expanded plastic packaging will be phased out.

It's worth noting that the definition of 'plastic' encompasses bio-based or compostable plastics, including paper items with plastic coatings or linings (with limited exemptions for certified compostable items).

The National Retail Association has supported businesses with 14 bans in the past 5 years and is now working with the WA Government to offer free resources and services to assist businesses in preparing for the upcoming bans.

The support services include a user-friendly website with downloadable factsheets and signage, a toll-free business hotline, online information sessions, supplier communications, and a dedicated team visiting retailers and hospitality businesses in the coming months.

Ebony Johnson, the National Retail Association Policy Manager, highlighted the strong support from retailers and their suppliers for environmental initiatives. She emphasized the need for support and guidance during the transition period, especially for small and medium businesses.

Johnson stated, “In 2024, we will be visiting over 4000 retailers in around 300 retail centres and precincts across the state. Our goal is to provide advice, factsheets, signage, and address any questions about the regulations.”

The team will be present in precincts across Greater Perth and regional cities to ensure a smooth transition and offer necessary assistance to businesses.
