Community United to Revitalize 20 Oceanic Drive
For over a decade, the once-thriving caravan park at 20 Oceanic Drive, Melros Beach, has cast a shadow over the beautiful Melros Beach.
For the past 15 years, 20 Oceanic Drive has stood as an unfortunate eyesore amidst the picturesque backdrop of Melros Beach. Once a thriving caravan park, this prime piece of land was apparently purchased by developers in 2008 and has since remained vacant, attracting all manner of unwanted activities and neglect. Meth addicts, graffiti artists, and illegal dumpers have all left their mark, turning this potential jewel into a blight on our community.
A Troubled History
The site’s limestone feature wall and retaining walls are now canvases for graffiti, including offensive symbols and gang tags. A once-sturdy Colourbond fence has deteriorated, with panels scattered into neighbors' yards. Reports and complaints to various council departments have repeatedly bounced back with the same message: it’s not their responsibility. Attempts to contact the developer, Sean Seet of Starlight Property Group, have been met with silence.
Environmental Impact
The neglect has had far-reaching consequences. Garbage deposited on the property often ends up blowing into the ocean, the surrounding Yalgorup National Park, and onto the beach, threatening local wildlife and the natural beauty of our area. Additionally, the lack of fire breaks poses a significant risk to both the park and neighboring properties.
Community and Council Response
After years of persistent complaints and advocacy from residents, there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. Coastal Ward Councilor Jess Smith and Mayor Rhys Williams recently visited the site and expressed their dismay at its condition. Encouragingly, they have assured residents that action is being taken and updates will be provided soon.
Hope on the Horizon
This commitment from local leaders is a testament to the power of community persistence. While it has been a long and frustrating journey, the dedicated efforts of residents are starting to pay off. With continued support and pressure, we hope to see the revitalization of 20 Oceanic Drive very soon, transforming it from a source of shame to a point of pride for our community.
As we await the much-needed cleanup, let's remain vigilant and continue to voice our concerns. Together, we can ensure that our beautiful coastal environment is preserved and cherished for generations to come.
