Stray & Feral Cats

Stray & Feral Cats

What if we told you that there's an array of natural solutions just waiting to be discovered?

Fear not, mates! There's a plethora of commercial products available at your local pet stores and retail outlets designed specifically to deter these unwelcome guests. Remember, it's crucial to prevent other domestic animals from ingesting or inhaling these cat repellents. Safety first!

Looking for more natural solutions? Let's explore some home remedies that can help keep those pesky felines at bay:

  • Oil of Wintergreen: Spray this on your fences for a feline-free boundary.
  • Mineral Turpentine: Spray this or soak an old rag in it and wrap it around a stick in your garden. The scent will keep cats away.
  • Cloudy Ammonia, Orange Peel, and Cayenne Pepper: These household items can also serve as effective deterrents.
  • Naphthalene Flakes: Put these in a bag and hang it somewhere accessible to the cats.
  • Vicks Vapour Rub: Smear this around your property to create a scent barrier.

Or how about concocting your own deterrent recipe? Here's one that's sure to send those strays packing:

  • Dice and mash 1 bulb of garlic or 1 large onion.
  • Mix in 1 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper or Tabasco Sauce.
  • Add 4 cups of warm water.
  • Let the mixture sit for 1 to 2 hours (or overnight).
  • Strain the solution into a watering can or spray bottle and apply around your property.

For residents of the lovely City of Mandurah, the Ranger Services offers a small quantity of cat traps to borrow. Please note that there's a bond of $130 payable on collection and certain conditions must be adhered to when hiring the trap.

Under the City of Mandurah Cat Local Law 2019, which came into effect on 29 January 2020, owners of nuisance cats can be penalised. If a registered, microchipped & sterilised cat is trapped, it will be returned to the owner along with an order to control the nuisance. However, if the cat is trapped again, a $200 penalty will be issued. Unregistered cats will be impounded.

Got questions or need assistance? Don't hesitate to contact the City rangers on 9550 3777 or email ranger.admin@mandurah.wa.gov.au. Together, let's ensure our Australian neighbourhoods remain as serene and beautiful as the stunning landscapes we call home!
